The Diffusion of Digital Competition Regulations: Spotlight on Southeast Asia

To foster knowledge-sharing, discussion, and collaboration in understanding the digital economy, TFGI Brownbag offers a platform for exploring research, gathering feedback, and engaging diverse perspectives.

In this Brownbag session, Gunn Jiravuttipong will present his research on The Diffusion of Digital Competition Regulations.

The paper examines recent developments in ex-ante regulations, with a particular focus on the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) and similar regulations, which has become a template for digital competition regulation. The analysis explores the diffusion of the DMA across jurisdictions, including Asia and BRICS countries, while highlighting the rapid and dynamic nature of regulatory developments in this field.

Building on this research, the paper will address developments within the ASEAN context, examining how the region is adapting to global trends. The discussion will include both country-level initiatives and regional efforts, such as the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA). Additionally, the presentation will explore how ASEAN policymakers can leverage enforcement experiences, expert reports, and draft legislation from other jurisdictions to navigate the challenges of adopting these new regulations.
